Dr. D’Onofrio is internationally known for her work in screening ED patients for alcohol and other drug use, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) She has received 2 NIAAA RO1 grants for ED practitioner-performed brief interventions for harmful and hazardous drinking (Project ED Health I and II). She is also PI on a NIDA RO1 for screening, intervention, treatment and referral of patients with opioid dependence (Project ED Health III). In addition she is the PI on a UO1 from SAMHSA that trains residents in all primary care specialties including Emergency Medicine Primary Care, Internal Medicine, Med/Peds, Pediatrics, OB/GYN and Psychiatry on SBIRT.

In addition Dr. D’Onofrio is a national expert in Women and Heart Disease and has been an integral part of the Yale New Haven Hospital Women’s Heart Program. She completed a 2 year DHHS grant evaluating targeted interventions for women with cardiac risk factors in the ED Chest Pain Center. She is also a senior co-investigator on a large NHLBI grant studying young women with acute MI, enrolling at over 100 sites nationally (PI: Krumholz).

Dr. D'Onofrio also serves as a mentor on several other grants funded and submitted by other DEM faculty. She routinely sits on review panels for NIDA, NIAAA and NHLBI. She is a founding member, representing Emergency Medicine, on the American Board of Addiction Medicine.
