Bones, which are made of different types of cells, proteins, and minerals, need a steady supply of oxygen-rich blood to stay strong. When the blood supply to the bone is interrupted, it can cause the bone tissue to die—a condition known as avascular necrosis.

Hankenson to Lead New Yale School of Medicine Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program
A new physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) residency program will train future physiatrists at the Yale School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation. The program, which will accept four medical school graduate trainees annually and requires four-years to complete, will complement the department’s existing orthopaedic surgery residency program. Jennifer Hankenson, MD is serving as the Residency Program Director and is working alongside PM&R Section Chief, Rummana Aslam, MD, to review applicants and welcome the inaugural trainees, who will begin in 2024.

Avascular Necrosis of the Hip
Avascular necrosis (AVN), also known as osteonecrosis, is the death of bone tissue caused by a disruption of blood flow within a bone. The condition usually affects the ends of bones where they terminate in a joint. Though AVN can occur in the ankle, elbow, shoulder, and jaw, it most commonly affects the hip joint.

Austrian Scholar Working with Yale to Quantify Patient Recovery Benchmarks
Wolfgang Grosek is a visiting Marshall Plan Scholar from the Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) Entrepreneurial School in Austria who is conducting research at Yale thanks to a collaborative project between the School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) and the School of Medicine. Grosek’s research project, which is entitled “Digitalization of the Physical Performance Test and Training,” will serve as the foundation for his master’s thesis in the field of mechatronics and smart technologies with a focus on electrical engineering at MCI. The research also has the potential to dramatically impact physical medicine and rehabilitation in orthopaedics.
