Xuchen Zhang, MD, PhD, Professor of Pathology, will be appointed as Director of Gastrointestinal Pathology effective July 1, succeeding Marie Robert, MD, Professor of Pathology and of Medicine (Digestive Diseases).
The move is part of a planned transition to allow Dr. Robert to focus on new projects in the areas of celiac disease and pancreatic cancer. Dr. Robert has provided outstanding leadership as director of the section. Under her direction, the Gastrointestinal (GI) Pathology team expanded to become one of the most prominent GI pathology groups – diagnostically and academically – in the country.
The GI team will maintain that excellence under Dr. Zhang, an outstanding diagnostician, teacher, investigator, and colleague who is also an internationally recognized liver pathologist and leader in national organizations. Dr. Zhang’s outstanding qualities and track record made him a strong choice to direct the GI program.
As part of the planned transition, Joseph Misdraji, MD, Associate Professor of Pathology and Director of Histology, will serve as the Director of the Gastrointestinal Pathology Fellowship Program. Dr. Misdraji joined Yale in November 2021 from Mass General Hospital, where he had been on the faculty for 22 years. Dr. Misdraji is the current President of the Rodger Haggitt Gastrointestinal Pathology Society and is an internationally sought lecturer and researcher in multiple GI diseases, including appendiceal mucinous neoplasms.
