About Us

The Yale Department of Neurosurgery is composed of a multidisciplinary team of faculty members, all dedicated to providing the best in patient care, research, and education. Many of our surgeons and scientists are internationally renowned as experts in the field, hold prominent leadership positions on nation boards and associations, and are frequently invited to speaker at international meetings and symposia. Their work has been recognized with numerous awards and prices and published widely and routinely in high impact, peer-reviewed journals.

Patient Care

Our surgeons and clinicians offer a full spectrum of services for neurological disease. They use state-of-the-art technologies, with the least invasiveness when possible, in one-of-a-kind facilities. Our philosophy of patient care respects patient preferences in neurosurgical decision-making and emphasizes the human component central to every patient/physician interaction. In an effort to offer the best possible patient experience, our faculty has developed several specialized programs providing the latest in diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Having one of only a few operating rooms in the world with intraoperative biplane angiography and intraoperative MRI capabilities to provide safer and more effective care for patients with vascular disease (i.e. aneurysms, vascular malformations) and brain tumors
  • Innovative use of flow-diverting technologies for minimally invasive ways of treating vascular disease
  • One of the best Epilepsy Surgery programs in the world
  • The Yale Brain Tumor Surgical Program, with expert surgeons specialized in performing complex brain tumor surgery, focusing on precise treatment based on the make-up of individual tumors
  • The first and most experienced non-invasive Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Program in the state and the largest in the region
  • The cutting edge use of deep brain stimulation for patients with movement disorders, such as Pakinson’s disease
  • Highly trained pediatric neurosurgeons with the only dedicated pediatric neurosurgical unit in the state
  • The Multisciplinary Yale Spine Institute with a focus on the minimally invasive treatment of spine disorders with comprehensive and integrative rehabilitation programs

To complement the excellence of our surgeons and clinicians, our research scientists are pioneers and contribute to the fundamental understanding of neurological diseases and the development of new and effective treatments. A commitment to translating new research into clinical therapies drives their work. This effort has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health with numerous grants and awards. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving as a leading center for genetics and genomics of brain tumors and aneurysms in the world
  • Proteomic profiles in human temporal lobe epilepsy and improved surgical technique for medically intractable epilepsy
  • Understanding the mechanisms of aging in the olfactory system
  • Discovering oncolytic virus targets, understanding the role of immunotherapy and the development and use of nanotechnology for the treatment of brain tumors
  • Studying the regulation of ion transport across cell membranes in the central nervous system and how genetically encoded alterations can contribute to developmental disorders
  • The use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for psychiatric disorders
  • The development of high-field methods for magnetic resonance imaging
  • Deciphering a technique to prevent intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants
