What does your appointment mean to you?

Being appointed as a clinical professor has profoundly validated my unwavering commitment to improving the patient care delivery system and advancing the fields of population health and quality improvement. This recognition by my peers affirms the substantial contributions I have made to healthcare, which is both humbling and incredibly rewarding. It motivates me to continue striving for excellence in my work, ensuring that our healthcare systems become more efficient and effective for all.

What was the first thing you did when you found out you were appointed as clinical professor?

When I found out I was appointed professor, I felt incredibly grateful and overcome with joy. I immediately phoned my wife to share the exciting news. I then reached out to my friends and the dedicated patient partners who have joined me on this journey, wanting to celebrate this wonderful milestone together.

What are you proud of most thus far in your career?

I embarked on a journey years ago to develop a platform for capturing the voice of the patient and integrating it into all aspects of clinical practice and population health. Witnessing the effectiveness of this strategy in improving the healthcare delivery system and strengthening the patient-provider relationship has been incredibly fulfilling. It has been a remarkable experience to see how empowering patients to share their perspectives can drive meaningful changes in care delivery. I also have loved mentoring students, residents, and colleagues in advancing their careers, particularly in the realm of quality improvement.

What is your favorite part of academia?

My greatest joy in academia comes from fostering innovation and demonstrating how these advancements lead to better results. Witnessing the spread of these innovations to various care delivery systems is particularly rewarding for me.

Tell us a fun fact about you—something people may find surprising.

As a kid, I was all about swimming and diving, but sadly, there weren't any chances to learn and compete. Fast-forward to college, where I took the plunge and joined the diving team. During my senior year, when we were coachless, I stepped up and trained three eager freshmen. To top it off, I was honored as the MVP and snagged third place in my college region that year—diving in headfirst, both in and out of the pool!

John Moriarty, MD (General Internal Medicine)

Chief Residency: Yale New Haven Hospital

Residency: Yale New Haven Hospital

MD: University of Maryland School of Medicine

BS: Fairfield University

What does your promotion mean to you?

There are academic institutions in which education takes a back seat to research and clinical care. I have been fortunate to be at Yale, where education is incredibly valued and supported. I feel my promotion is a great example of that support. I also have immense gratitude to my educational leadership team. This promotion is as much about my amazing associate program directors, chief residents over the years, and outstanding program coordinator, as it is about me.

What was the first thing you did when you found out you were promoted to professor?

I couldn’t wait to tell my kids, family, friends, and mentors. Many a joyous text message was sent. It was also great to finally be on par with Sherlock Holmes’s nemesis. Now when a patient or a colleague mentions Sherlock, I can indeed say, yes, I am Professor Moriarty. It was also pretty cool to change my email signature…

What are you proud of most thus far in your career?

As a program director for over 10 years, I am most proud of the Yale Primary Care Program (YPC). It has been a pleasure to train outstanding residents, mentor amazing faculty, and have a significant impact on the culture and community at Yale and in New Haven. YPC is one of the most innovative primary care residencies in the country, and it has been wonderful to be a part of that innovation, driving mission-based care and creating novel education curricula and research for our residents, fellows, and faculty.

What is your favorite part of academia?

My favorite aspect of academia is the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded colleagues across the world and, through research, committee, and organizational work, impact the training of residents not only at Yale but at institutions across the country.

My favorite musical genre is heavy metal. I am looking forward to taking my daughter Grace to see Iron Maiden this fall.
