Informatics

The Informatics section of the Department of Laboratory Medicine began as one of the first "Laboratory Instrumentation" sections in the country, originally designing some of the earliest automated clinical laboratory devices and even one of the original Laboratory Robots (named "Clancy" by the staff). While most academic medical centers were still reporting results on paper, the section at YNHH developed one of the first home-grown informatics systems and continues to support electronic laboratory information dating back to the 1970s. Since then, the department has moved through several laboratory information systems with the most recent move to Beaker in 2016.

The Laboratory Informatics section has continued to evolve, with faculty now involved in several clinical and translational research initiatives. The section is closely aligned with the Yale New Haven Health Medical Information Officers, Data Architect group, Joint Data Analytics Team, and the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation. Investigators within Laboratory Informatics also provide support for central projects with Yale New Haven Health and the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation, including our centralized data analytics and predictive modeling platforms.

Investigators in the group lead and collaborate on range of projects, including computer vision, digital pathology and high-resolution imaging, clinical predictive modeling, and pharmacogenomic clinical decision support.
