Charalampia Koutsioumpa, MD, PhD, a resident in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Neurology, has been selected for the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) 2024 Futures in Neurologic Research scholarship. She will be formally recognized at the AAN 2024 Annual Meeting in April.
The scholarship covers registration, travel, and lodging costs, and grants special access to programming and networking for medical students and trainees at the Annual Meeting. Scholarship awardees are selected based on an outstanding commitment to pursuing neurologic research in their future careers.
While attending the Annual Meeting, Koutsioumpa will present her PhD research on skin and touch sensory neuron molecular crosstalk in mice during development.
“I am very excited about the peripheral nervous system, its basic science aspects, and its clinical applications for sensory neuropathies and neuromuscular disorders,” she describes. “I aim to start combining those interests during residency through the great resources that the Yale Neurology Residency Program offers.”
Koutsioumpa hopes her experience at the Annual Meeting will not only serve her residency goals, but also her career goals, as she aims to merge her clinical and research interests.
“I ultimately aspire to [become] a physician-scientist running a basic science lab and seeing patients at the hospital. I hope to use this scholarship to connect with other clinician-scientists in the field, attend the educational programming at the AAN Annual Meeting, and present my work.”
Prior to residency, Koutsioumpa completed medical school in her native Greece. She then pursued her PhD at the Harvard Biological and Biomedical Sciences program.
