Fellow Focus in Four

Corey Cavanaugh, MD, fellow, nephrology

Why did you choose medicine and Yale?

Medicine was an easy choice for me. Physiology was always my favorite class growing up. I love the complexity and the precision of the human body, especially the kidney. Add the fact that I can actually help people, it’s a dream job. My choice to come to Yale was not as easy, but equally gratifying. I knew the nephrology division was world class, but I wasn't sure if I was ready for such a rigorous fellowship. Dr. Ursula Brewster convinced me I was, and it was the best decision I've made for my career.

What is a fun fact about you?

I love to barbecue. Most weekends, if I’m not on call, I'll be smoking some sort of meat and watching sports with my family. I make a good brisket, not great, but good.

Perks of New Haven life?

New Haven is just the right size for me, without sacrificing too much of the luxuries of a larger city. There is good food, music, and entertainment, yet there are places likes Bishops Orchards and Arethusa Farm Dairy. It’s a good blend of urban and rural.

What is your 5-year goal? 10-year? Overall career?

To be honest, in 5 - 10 years, my goal is to make it to my son’s soccer practice and help my wife with the laundry! I'm not so regimented. But my overall career goal is to become a clinician educator, and expand the field of nephrology as a whole. I plan to focus my career on caring for patients with glomerulonephritis. Beyond that, we'll just wait and see.
