WHRY Welcomes New Class of Undergraduate Fellows

Women’s Health Research at Yale’s undergraduate fellows have an interest in exploring the health of women and the influence of sex and gender on health. Each fellow is paired with a mentor who engages them in this important area of study. These are the 2023-2024 WHRY Undergraduate fellows.

Emily Anghad | Class of 2025

Major: History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health

Mentor: Sarah Lichenstein, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry

Project: Impact of Substance Abuse on Women

Aeka Guru | Class of 2025

Majors: Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology; Global Health Studies Certificate

Mentor: Kelsey Martin, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine (Hematology).

Project: Medical Curriculum Development

Quote: “As an aspiring physician, I will be conducting research regarding the integration of sex and gender differences into the medical school curriculum to create resources which address gender inequities in clinical settings.”

Stephanie Montealegre | Class of 2026

Majors: Molecular, Cellular, & Developmental Biology and Ethnicity, Race, & Migration

Mentor: Manuel Paris, PsyD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry.

Project: Engaging Latinx Communities Through Culturally Responsive

Quote: “As a daughter of immigrants I am excited to contribute to the research of women in minority groups. I hope to learn more about the research gap between gender groups and how ethnicity can play a role in that as well.”

Mahnoor Sarfraz | Class of 2024

Major: Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology

Mentor: Audrey Merriam, MD, MS, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences

Project: Maternal and Fetal Health

Kayla Yup | Class of 2025

Majors: Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology; History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health (Science Journalism).

Mentor: Carolyn M. Mazure, PhD, Norma Weinberg Spungen and Joan Lebson Bildner Professor in Women's Health Research and WHRY Director.

Project: Why Didn’t I Know This? Student Blog

Quote: “As an aspiring journalist, my goal is to translate jargon and demonstrate the urgency of women’s health topics to the audience. I’m grateful for science communication training and to share the latest breakthroughs in women’s health.”
