Clinical Fellowships

The Yale Department of Anesthesia provides a variety of clinical fellowships. We offer a wide range of supervised opportunities for fellowship trainees.

Thoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship

The Thoracic Anesthesiology fellowship is an exciting one-year program approved by the Yale School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education office. The fellowship is designed to provide advanced clinical training and expand knowledge in the practice of modern thoracic anesthesiology, promote teaching skills, and enhance fellows’ confidence to practice independently in a high acuity environment. Our group provides care to approximately 1000 patients annually, undergoing a wide array of surgeries such as lung resection via open, thoracoscopic or robotic approaches, minimally invasive esophagectomies as well as complex airway resection surgery (tracheal or bronchial resection, tracheoesophageal fistula repairs, etc.). In select situations, we provide care to patients undergoing thoracic surgery supported by veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. We work in close collaboration with the pulmonary interventional team providing care to patients undergoing endobronchial ultrasound evaluations, rigid and flexible bronchoscopies with various therapeutic interventions. Our fellows have the opportunity to rotate twice a month with the pulmonary interventional team, gaining hands-on experience in performing these types of procedures.

The fellowship consists of three weekly clinical days in thoracic operating rooms, a day weekly in which the fellow functions as an attending anesthesiologist in general operating rooms, 2 academic days monthly and 2 days monthly spent in the interventional pulmonary lab. The fellows have one month of elective rotations and they can choose among various options such as regional anesthesia, cardiovascular anesthesia or critical care medicine. There is no overnight or weekend call commitment, but it is expected that the fellow finishes the assigned case for the day.

Fellows are expected to participate in the weekly thoracic anesthesiology and surgical conference, educational thoracic anesthesiology lectures, weekly grand rounds sessions and the annual Thoracic Anesthesia Symposium. Fellows can choose to get involved in clinical or basic research performed within the department or within Yale School of Medicine. However, we expect that fellows submit at least one abstract/difficult case to the Thoracic Anesthesia Symposium and, in addition, participate in an educational project of choice which will be offered by the fellowship Program Director.
