Clinical Fellowships

The Yale Department of Anesthesia provides a variety of clinical fellowships. We offer a wide range of supervised opportunities for fellowship trainees.

Pain Medicine Fellowship

Physicians applying for the fellowship program in pain medicine must be currently enrolled in, or have completed an ACGME accredited anesthesiology, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, and/or emergency medicine residency. Applicants must be either board certified in their respective specialties or in the examination process with their respective boards. They must also be eligible to obtain a State of Connecticut medical license. Fellows perform in the capacity of a PGY-5 level trainee.

The ACGME accredited Pain Medicine Fellowship at Yale University provides trainees with the advanced knowledge, diagnostic, and technical skills necessary to build a successful career in the specialty. Additionally, the program strives to foster academic interest in bench and clinical research, as well as, quality and safety. The goal of the program is to train future leaders in Chronic Pain Management with graduates who are clinically adept, to meet the needs of their communities, as well as, scientifically and academically inclined.

Training is divided between clinical experience and research. Fellows rotate through three primary sites, Yale New Haven Health, Yale New Haven Health Spine Center at Long Wharf, and the Veteran Affairs Connecticut Health Care. Subspecialty rotations in addition to the outpatient chronic pain clinic include physical medicine and rehabilitation, pain psychology, neurology, acute pain service, palliative care and regional anesthesia.

Throughout the course of their training our fellows:

  1. Develop an in-depth understanding of basic science concepts, clinical skills, application of evidence based medicine and critical thinking, as well as, emerging research within the field of pain medicine
  2. Learn interventional techniques and advanced surgical skills in the treatment of chronic and acute pain conditions
  3. Develop the skills necessary to implement care across multiple determinants of an individual patient’s health and welfare

The fellowship at Yale University has a comprehensive didactic program encompassing diverse topics in pain medicine, practice management, and board preparation. The education program includes lectures by clinical faculty and invited speakers, weekly anesthesia grand rounds, a monthly journal club, practice based learning discussion, and multidisciplinary spine conferences. Fellows also develop thirty minute didactics to facilitate academic development.
