Clinical Fellowships

The Yale Department of Anesthesia provides a variety of clinical fellowships. We offer a wide range of supervised opportunities for fellowship trainees.

Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship

Post-graduate Education within the Cardiac Anesthesiology Division is designed to foster the growth of physician leaders within the field of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology. Our program is designed to provide trainees with the skills and experiences necessary to provide state-of-the-art anesthesia care for patients with complex cardiac, thoracic and vascular disease. We stress the fundamentals of cardiovascular physiology, pathophysiology, and their attendant perioperative implications as well as placing heavy emphasis on advanced transesophageal echocardiography to direct surgical management. Each member of our faculty dedicates their full clinical time to the care of adult cardiothoracic surgical patients and maintains advanced peri-operative echocardiography certification. In addition, several of our faculty members possess dual-fellowship certification and staff our Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU).

Our team cares for an exceptional variety of complex cardiovascular disease with robust and growing cardiac surgical volumes. We maintain an excellent case per fellow ratio. Major areas of subspecialty surgical care include complex thoracic aortic surgery, heart-failure and transplant surgery, complex mitral repair, and robotic cardiac surgery. Our (CTICU) also cares for a large volume of extracorporeal support for patients with severe pulmonary or combined cardiopulmonary dysfunction requiring mechanical support.

In addition to the development of advanced intra-operative anesthesia skills, fellows are expected to achieve certification in advanced perioperative echocardiography upon graduation and become adept in the perioperative direction and management of cardiac support devices.

Fellows in Cardiac Anesthesia will also have the opportunity to participate in research projects with Anesthesiology faculty as well as with Cardiothoracic Surgical and Cardiology staff.
