About
Clinical Care
Overview
Samuel Laurencin, MD, PhD, is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in treating arthritis, joint pain, and other musculoskeletal conditions. He often uses integrative medicine approaches tailored to each patient’s overall health, rather than focusing solely on the affected joint. He offers surgical options for hip and knee replacement and has extensive experience managing and preventing long-term issues that can arise from total hip replacements, including metal wear debris.
Dr. Laurencin’s approach reflects his appreciation for the art as well as the science of surgery. “I enjoy taking an arthritic hip or knee with bone-on-bone degeneration on imaging and changing it to a well-aligned, functional joint,” he says. “It is a joy to see how successful joint replacement can restore function and ultimately help regain an ideal quality of life.” He also emphasizes education as an integral part of patient care, noting that clearly explaining imaging results can help individuals better understand their condition and participate actively in their treatment.
As an assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Laurencin’s research focuses on applying regenerative engineering, biomaterials, biomechanics, and machine learning to discover new materials and approaches to optimize orthopedic treatments. By studying the nature and pathology of musculoskeletal disease, he aims to advance therapies that enhance recovery and patient outcomes.
Dr. Laurencin received his medical training from Drexel University. He then completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery and pursued a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he gained specialized experience caring for patients with complex joint conditions.
