Rehabilitation Engineering

The rehabilitation engineering program centers around developing technical solutions for the conservative management of chronic neuromuscular conditions. Members of the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) faculty and residents collaborate with engineering faculty and students to research novel rehabilitative approaches to treat chronic conditions and sequelae from trauma. Previous projects have focused on stroke rehabilitation using a balance board with feedback and servo-motor driven mirror therapy. For patients who have had total joint surgery, we are implementing an initiative to improve patient adherence to physical therapy programs using virtual reality. Research areas include, but are not limited to: post-stroke, post-traumatic brain injury, post-spinal cord trauma, post-arthroplasty, neurological disorders, lifestyle intervention, whole health, and chronic pain.
