Overview

Ernest A. Topran, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist, says he thrives on helping women with everyday problems and empowering them to make the right choices.

“What I like most about my job is the intensity. I have the opportunity to help women. It could be something extreme that requires surgery, but surprisingly, it’s often little things that help them more than anything else,” Dr. Topran says. “That might mean helping underserved patients find the information or insurance or pharmacy help they need. And that is extremely rewarding.”

Dr. Topran, who sees patients at offices in New Haven and surrounding towns, treats women with menstrual dysfunction, abnormal menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, infertility concerns and endometriosis. As an obstetrician, he also provides care to women during and after pregnancy. With every patient he sees, he strives for early recognition of potential health problems to help avoid future serious complications.

“I try to educate and empower my patients. They might have been told, ‘This is what’s best for you,’ but maybe that was the way it was done 40 years ago and is no longer acceptable,” he says. “I give them the most comprehensive and up-to-date information I have and let them make a choice. Their choice may be good for today, but it might not be for tomorrow, and I make sure they understand that.”

What he loves about delivering babies, he says, is its singular focus. “This is one of the few times where you can interact with a patient and nothing else gets in the way,” he says. “You are present 100 percent, which, to be able to do that with them, is a gift the patients give to me.”
