June 06, 2022

On June 3, 2022, the Yale Department of Neurosurgery hosted its annual William F. Collins, Jr. M.D. Neurosurgery Resident Research Symposium. The event aims to celebrate the research questions our residents have pursued in the last year and give them practice for presenting their work. This year's symposium was held both virtually over Zoom and in-person at the Park Auditorium.

Chair Murat Gunel, M.D., and professors emeritus Joseph Piepmeier, M.D., and Dennis Spencer, M.D., as well as distinguished adjunct professor, Michael L. J. Apuzzo, opened up the event with remembrances of William F. Collins, M.D., for whom the lectureship is dedicated every year.

The nine residents presenting their work this year were: Brianna Theriault, MD, Ph.D., Andrew Koo, MD, Layton Lamsam, MD, Joseph Antonios, MD, Ph.D., Aladine Elsamadicy, MD, Nanthiya Sujijantarat, MD, Stephanie Robert, MD, Ph.D., Adam Kundishora, MD, and Christopher Hong, MD. Their research spanned topics such as "Neurosurgery and the Elderly" to "Defining the immune profile of radiation necrosis through single-cell analysis of intracranial lesions."

“It was an absolutely fabulous day for me, seeing our residents at the podium in a parade with their talents and commitment to the task in full display!" says Dr. Apuzzo. "Each presentation was a “story” in itself.”

The stellar resident line-up with followed up by Amy Heimberger, MD, Jean Malnati Miller Professor of Brain Tumor Research Professor of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern Medicine who lectured on, "The Immune Landscape of CNS Tumors: Implications for Immunotherapy."
