Issue 15: Summer 2024
Letter from the Director
July 30, 2024
Greetings to everyone at the start of yet another academic year! Our newsletter celebrates many conclusions and beginnings: graduations, degree conferrals, matriculation of a new cohort of summer program participants, and the welcoming of our newest class of MD/PhD students. Such milestones always inspire reflection, this year perhaps more than most for me, as it also marks the completion of ten years of serving as Yale’s program director.
This May, our program submitted its first MSTP renewal after receiving one of the “new” MSTP awards in 2020, which supported years 46-50 of NIH-funded MD/PhD training at Yale! Preparing and reviewing data about recruitment, training and outcomes made it clear that the program and its students continue to change. In academic year 2013-14, the program had a total of 104 students: 46% were women, 8% were socioeconomically disadvantaged, 8% identified as belonging to groups underrepresented in medicine. Fast-forward ten years, after a commitment from former dean Bob Alpern to increase the size of the incoming MD/PhD class and a re-thinking of our processes of outreach, holistic review and recruitment: our program looks different. 53% of the 154 students we trained in AY 2023-24 were women, 27% were underrepresented, 29% identified as socioeconomically disadvantaged, and 18% were supported by accommodations for a chronic illness or disability. Each of these students accomplishes amazing things in the lab, clinic and community – embodying what our current dean, Nancy Brown, calls “inclusive excellence”.
The material and intangible joys of being a physician-scientist – the privilege of working on something that we believe matters and makes a difference; the engagement with discovery research, teaching, clinical care and mentoring – balance a training path that is long (and at times seemingly endless) and a career that is composed of struggles and setbacks as well as progress and satisfaction. Our job is to have our students’ backs as they embark on this path, providing them with the training, resources, confidence and support to stay true to this career. I thank the alumni reading this for being part of that support system: your generous gifts of mentorship, advice, community and dollars help many students navigate the challenges of training and find their best career and life.
I’m not sure who will be writing this director’s letter ten years from now – but I want the program that they lead and the students that it trains to remain the embodiment of inclusive excellence. To make this happen, we have set a goal of fundraising to support our students in times of critical financial need, when an unforeseen expense can’t be met by a family gift or loan. Donations to our existing alumni fund can therefore be directed specifically to support students in need or earmarked for subsidizing student conference participation (the main use of these funds currently). If you find yourself in a position where you can pay it forward in this way, thank you.
With best wishes to all,
Dr. K.

Supporting student success and unforseen needs
The MD-PhD Program Emergency Student Aid Fund is used to offset financial emergencies, unplanned expenses, or costs associated with academic success to help current MD-PhD students with demonstrated, pressing financial hardships. Some common examples include catastrophic life events, unforseen physical or mental health expenses, emergency travel or transportation, assistance to attend key conferences, housing or food insecurity, and unexpected bills. *NEW* MD-PhD Surgical Society
The MD-PhD Surgical Society was founded in Summer 2024 by Elena Wilson (Yale MD-PhD Student) and Sabrina DaSilva (University of Pennsylvania MD-PhD Student) to support the personal and professional development of MD-PhD students working towards careers as surgeon-scientists. The hope is that this will be a community of MD-PhD students, residents, and faculty that can work together to meet the unique needs of students in the MD-PhD training path, who have found a passion for surgery and its subspecialties. Our hope is that this society will provide mentorship and potential research opportunities, camaraderie, and resources specific to building skillsets important for success as both surgeons and scientists. Currently, the Society is working at building its network across MD-PhD programs nationwide, while compiling faculty and resident mentors who themselves are MD, PhDs, to match students with. We plan to distribute monthly newsletters and host quarterly events focused on representing the diverse career paths of MD-PhD surgeon-scientists nationwide. We are looking forward to kicking off with our fall meet and greet in September and are excited to see how this group continues to grow. If you are interested in supporting the society as a mentor, or more generally, please feel free to reach out at mdphdsurgicalsociety@gmail.com.

Announcing the Recipients of the 2024 MD-PhD Program Student Prizes
MYTIEN NGUYEN was awarded the MD-PhD Program Student Prize for contributions to DIVERSITY, EQUITY and INCLUSION for her leadership, commitment and impact that she has had at YSM and nationally on medical student DEI initiatives. 8 years ago, Mytien helped to create SPIDY (Student Perspectives on Inclusion and Diversity at Yale) which is now a critical part of recruitment and now peer-to-peer mentorship in the program. One nominator wrote, "Mytien has done extensive research on addressing diversity and equity in MD and MD/PhD admissions, diversity and team science, and the association between socioeconomic status, sex, race, and ethnicity and career choices. Her groundbreaking studies have significant implications and will guide our efforts both short and long-term to promote diversity and build an inclusive community among physician-scientists." Here are just two examples of her latest publications:
Nguyen M, Meeks LM, Sheets ZC, Betchkal R, Pereira-Lima K, Moreland CJ, Boatright DH. Outcomes of the Main Residency Match for Applicants With Disability. JAMA. 2024 May 14;331(18):1590-1592. doi: 10.1001/jama.2024.5000. PMID: 38630504; PMCID: PMC11024793.

JOSH SASKIN was awarded the MD-PhD Program Student Prize for contributions to COMMUNITY given to students who engage in ongoing service, leadership, mentorship, and other activities that promote the social and academic connections that are at the core of our MD-PhD Program community. Nominations lauded his enthusiastic and generous efforts to bring MD-PhD students together; just a few contributions Josh has made in his short time in the program include representing the M1s in Student Council and making connections to older students, pouring his heart into ensuring that "all voices were represented" during a controversial Holiday Fundraiser, and collaborating with his classsmates to make Second Look "robust, engaging and incredible" for all.
SAM LIBURD was awarded the MD-PhD Program Student Prize for contributions to the PROGRAM. Nominations were submitted for students committed to creating positive and enduring change in our program and their efforts have made significant contributions to enhance physician-scientist training at Yale. "Without Sam, the House System would not have survived COVID", and he continues to work tirelessly to not only sustain but drive the mission of the MD-PhD HOUSE SYSTEM to promote vertical integration of students and foster an environment and culture that allows students across all years in the program to meet, have fun, and form meaningful, long-lasting connections with each other.

2023-2024 Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Predoctoral F30 and F31 Fellowship Awards
Recognizing that grant-writing is a core competency for physician-scientists, all rising fourth-year students are now required to participate in a month-long Proposal Development Module as part of the Leadership and Research Management for Physician-Scientists curriculum. We recently published a paper in JCI describing the importance of having grantwriting workshops three times per year in advance of each NIH fellowship application deadline (April 8, August 8, Dec 8), providing detailed guidelines and checklists, essential 1:1 coaching and advice, and developing administrative innovations and resources.
Students listed here have received a formal notice of award as of July 30, 2024 for submissions in academic year 2023-2024 but we have quite a few pending applications that have received promising impact scores. The complete list of awarded fellowships will be updated here.
