Overview
Wayne Panullo, MD, is a general gastroenterologist who has been in practice for 37 years and specializes in technological advances, including improved techniques to remove large colon polyps.
“Previously, patients underwent surgery, but we now know they are better off with endoscopic removal,” Dr. Panullo says.
He also uses advanced technology to diagnose gastroesophageal reflux. For example, the Bravo procedure is a tiny endoscopically placed probe, which records acid reflux over 24 to 48 hours.
“Capsule endoscopy is an amazing, noninvasive microtechnology utilizing a pill the size of a large vitamin, which patients swallow,” Dr. Panullo explains. “The camera transmits more than 50,000 images over eight hours. Currently, the camera is utilized to diagnose intestinal bleeding, tumors, and Crohn’s disease, but I expect the indications will expand.”
Dr. Panullo says he appreciates the privilege of helping his patients through tough times. “Telling a patient they have cancer is always difficult, but I reassure them that I am always available to support them and their families in any way I can,” he says.
