Mayor Fernando Haddad received today in his office, the President of Yale University, Peter Salovey, and the Executive Director of the Office of International Relations at Yale, Don Filer. Third oldest university in the United States, Yale has graduated 5 U.S. Presidents, 19 U.S. Supreme Court Judges and 52 Nobel Prizes.
The meeting of the President with the mayor occurs after the participation of the First Lady and Coordinator of São Paulo Carinhosa Program, Ana Estela Haddad, earlier this month, in the "Forum for Change on Early Child Development", organized by the Global Health Leadership Institute in the city of New Haven, United States.
During the meeting, the president of Yale talked about research and programs developed by the University, most notably the ones developed by the Child Study Center, and the possibilities of cooperation with São Paulo Carinhosa, the program coordinated by the First Lady. When talking about the situation of policies aimed at early childhood in the United States, Salovey spoke of the difficulties in that country to develop a common curriculum for schools and make education compulsory from the age of four. For him, "every child should be in some type of program geared to child development."
The mayor spoke about the National High School Exam, transformed under his leadership on the Ministry of Education in an examination for admission in universities, likening it to the system used in the United States and France. Also spoke about the ongoing reform in São Paulo education and local education challenges.
For Peter Salovey, psychologist and one of the main theorists of Emotional Intelligence, early childhood, especially between 0 and 3 years is the period of greatest impact on the development of the individual from the psychological point of view.
The Department of International and Federative Affairs will study the possibility of establishing cooperation between Yale University and the city in order to strengthen the exchange between Sao Paulo Carinhosa Program and Yale Activities on Early Child Development.
