Biography

Dr. Melnick is a nationally recognized clinician-scientist in emergency medicine, clinical informatics, and health services research whose work focuses on using digital health systems to improve care and generate evidence within routine clinical practice. His research integrates human-centered design, electronic health record (EHR) data, clinical decision support, implementation science, measurement science, and pragmatic clinical trials. Across this work, he has helped advance the EHR from a record of care and platform for deploying tools into infrastructure for clinical investigation: making clinical work measurable, evidence-based interventions actionable, and their effects rigorously evaluable at scale.

He has served as Principal Investigator of multiple federally funded studies, including the NIH-funded EMBED pragmatic trial across five health systems and the ongoing NIDA-supported ADAPT R33. EMBED evaluated human-centered, workflow-integrated decision support for emergency department initiation of buprenorphine and demonstrated that well-designed digital interventions can change clinician behavior while also revealing barriers between adoption and treatment delivery. ADAPT builds directly on those findings through real-time patient identification, direct measurement of intervention exposure and engagement, implementation strategies, and a multiphase optimization approach. In parallel, Dr. Melnick has helped establish EHR audit logs and related metadata as scalable measures of clinical work, linking digital activity with usability, workload, burnout, productivity, patient interaction, workforce attrition, and organizational performance. His recent work extends these methods to emerging AI-enabled technologies and reusable infrastructure for embedded evidence generation and learning health systems.

Dr. Melnick is Chief of the Research Section in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Yale School of Medicine and Program Director of the Yale/VA Clinical Informatics Fellowship. He is double board-certified in Emergency Medicine and Clinical Informatics and practices clinically at Yale New Haven Hospital. He is deeply committed to mentorship and has trained faculty, fellows, residents, and students across disciplines and career stages, many of whom have pursued careers in clinical informatics, health services research, and academic medicine.

Overview

Ted Melnick, MD, specializes in emergency medicine and clinical informatics, using technology and data to improve healthcare delivery.

As an associate professor of emergency medicine and biostatistics (health informatics) at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Melnick is working to improving the use of electronic health records (EHR) and has contributed to research on the relationship between EHR use and physician burnout. He also works on projects to help start treatment for opioid use disorder in emergency settings.

Dr. Melnick received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his residency in emergency medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
