Postdoctoral Biomedical Informatics Fellowship at the VA

The VA Medical Informatics Fellowship Program provides two years of post-residency / postdoctoral research and educational learning opportunities to board eligible or board certified physicians and dentists and postdoctoral associated health professionals at competitively selected VA sites. Fellows spend their time in research and educational activities relevant to VA. Mentors of national stature provide guidance to fellows in rich learning environments. Graduates are expected to be role models in leading, developing, conducting, and evaluating innovative medical informatics programs.

Professors Cynthia Brandt and Amy Justice are the Directors and Professor Julie Womack is the Associate Director of the fellowship program. The program is based at VA Connecticut Healthcare System and is closely affiliated with the NLM funded Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Training Program.

Applicants should have a doctoral degree (e.g., an MD or PhD) in the clinical or biological sciences. Applicants should also have considerable computer programming experience and a desire to pursue a career based, in whole or in part, in Biomedical Informatics.

The postdoctoral fellowship is normally a 2-3 year experience. If appropriate, a fellow (e.g., with an MD) may enroll for a longer period of time to study for a PhD, for example in Yale’s PhD program in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.
