Thank you from Dr. Roberta Hines

August 12, 2021

It has been a distinct honor and privilege to serve as the Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Yale for the past 26 years. When I assumed this role, I recognized the opportunity for growth which was possible due to a strong foundation and the Department’s emerging national prominence. My optimism for the department has been realized and today I am proud to transition a dynamic diverse department with an established national and international reputation for excellence.

The department has realized growth and expanded expertise in all of its missions. The clinical enterprise has expanded to include expertise in all areas of operative, ICU, procedural and pain management, as well as multiple system sites. In all of the clinical ventures we remain committed to delivering the highest quality of evidenced base care to our patients.

The Resident and Fellowship programs have seen exponential growth to ensure we have the broadest training opportunities allowing our graduates to lead in our specialty or chosen sub-specialty. Our innovative research programs have enabled us to prepare the next generation of physician scientists to help answer questions not even contemplated when I became Chair. Our renewed focus on diversity, equity and inclusion will be pivotal in positioning the department to serve as a leader in this important area.

All of these remarkable accomplishments were made possible through the dedication and commitment of the departmental faculty, trainees, and staff. I want to express my gratitude to everyone for their efforts and support. I recognize our achievements were the results of everyone’s contributions. We have been able to accomplish so much, and I am grateful to all of you.

During this remarkable journey, I am most grateful for all the friendships I have made along the way. These friendships go beyond our work together and will continue to be cherished by me. Although I am transitioning as Chair, I will still remain a dedicated and active member of the Department. Please know that I am a resource you can count on. I am looking forward to working with the Office of Academic and Professional Development (OAPD) at YSM to assist with advancing current faculty development. I am also looking forward to reengaging with medical students and trainees. The completion of the latest edition of my textbook has also inspired me to contemplate some new research projects.

I once again want to thank you for all your support and friendship. I am looking forward to participating and celebrating the department’s next chapter.

Fondly,

Roberta Hines, MD
