Processing of Secondary Appointments

Both Appointments Within YSM

Secondary appointments within a department are listed on the department's panorama.

Initial Appointments/Reappointments

  • Secondary department sends Secondary Appointment Form to Primary department for Chair's signature.
  • The signed form is returned to the Primary department for entry into BMS, including updating the title screen.
  • Copy of the signed form should be sent to the Office for Faculty Affairs by the Secondary department.

Secondary Appointments for Department Chairs

The Secondary department should send the signed Secondary Appointment Form to the Office of the Deputy Dean for Academic & Scientific Affairs for signature in place of the Primary department.

Promotions

  • Primary department must notify the Secondary department about the promotion consideration. If the Secondary department decides to promote, a signed Secondary Appointment Form should be sent to the Chair of the Primary department for signature.
  • The signed form should be returned to the Primary department for entry into BMS, including updating the title screen.
  • Copy of the signed form should be sent to the Office for Faculty Affairs by the Secondary department.

Secondary Appointments Between YSM & FAS/Other Professional Schools

If the Secondary appointment is in YSM, the YSM Secondary Appointment Form should be used for signature by both department Chairs.

If the Secondary appointment is in FAS or another professional school (e.g. Nursing, Management), the FAS Faculty Appointment Form should be used for signature by both department Chairs.

Primary Position is at Yale Health Services (YHS)

  • The Secondary Appointment Form should be submitted by the Secondary department. A signature from YHS is not required.
  • Send signed form to the Office for Faculty Affairs.
