Biography

Prof. Miller is the founder and previous Director of the Yale Center for Medical Informatics (YCMI) and of Yale’s Biomedical Informatics research training program. Biomedical Informatics is a discipline at the intersection of biomedicine and the computing and information sciences. The field focuses on the creative application of computers in clinical medicine, biomedical research, and medical education. In clinical medicine, the growing use of computers in patient care, education, and research makes the field increasingly important. In biomedical research, informatics is rapidly becoming a critical component of virtually all bioscience fields. Prof. Miller's research includes major initiatives in clinical, neuro-, and genome informatics, as well as interdisciplinary research at the intersections of these fields.

Research

Overview

I am the founder and previous Director of the Yale Center for Medical Informatics (YCMI) and of the School of Medicine’s research training program in Biomedical Informatics, which is supported by the National Library of Medicine. Biomedical Informatics, a field at the intersection of biomedicine and the computing and information sciences, focuses on the creative use of computers in clinical medicine, biomedical research, and medical education. Research at the YCMI includes major projects in clinical, neuro-, and genome informatics. Current projects include 1) working with Prof. Gordon Shepherd (Neuroscience) on several neuroinformatics project, including the Yale SenseLab project and the national Neuroscience Information Framework (NIF) initiative; 2) working with several groups to develop University-wide informatics support for genomic and proteomic research; 3) developing databases and tools used by the laboratory of Prof. Kenneth Kidd (Genetics); and 4) a growing number of clinical and genomic research projects based at the West Haven VA Medical Center.
