Engaging Patients Through a Personal Health Record
Healthcare is increasingly moving toward patient-centered care and patient-centered research is the next logical step, but investigators face several challenges. Engaging patients in research is difficult and time-consuming. Collecting follow-up information – especially regarding medical care – requires extensive resources and is often incomplete. Sharing research data with patients is an important component, but there was no existing suitable platform to accomplish this.
An initiative, led by Harlan Krumholz, MD, professor of internal medicine (cardiology) and director of the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE), has developed the HUGO PHR, a next generation personal health record to address these issues.
Developed by HugoHealth, in partnership with YCCI and the Yale New Haven Health System, HUGO is a cloud-based highly secure personal health record that can be auto-populated and updated daily from multiple EHRs to allow patients to have a single source for all their health information. In addition, Hugo was designed to make it easier for patients to share their health information with researchers. HUGO integrates clinical systems and research by:
- Offering an efficient way to match individuals to clinical studies;
- Moving data to researchers with participants’ authorization and ensuring that they are a vital component of the research process;
- Allowing researchers to easily communicate with participants and share data and results from the research study
- Providing a conduit for patient-generated data
