Letter from Naftali Kaminski, MD, Chief of Yale-PCCSM

I am writing to you with a heavy heart because of the invasion of Ukraine. I always hoped that the collective memory of the death and destruction caused in the 20th Century in the same region by expansionism and authoritarianism would serve as a deterrent for wars in the 21st Century. Obviously, they did not. Let’s hope this conflict comes to a rapid, just and peaceful resolution. If you have team members with roots, friends, or family in the region, please convey my solidarity to them.

In the months that passed since our last communication, Connecticut weathered the winter’s COVID-19 surge. Our teams saw over 1,400 patients hospitalized in our MICU and SDU at Yale New Haven Hospital in 10 weeks, from December 1, 2021 to February 14, 2022. We were ready; we increased attending and fellow teams, expanded tele-ICU capacity and added shift commanders, but continued our regular clinical, research, and educational activities with minimal disruption. Our newly opened state-of-the-art Winchester Center for Lung Disease continued to grow, and our research teams excelled in cutting-edge studies, including outcomes and equity; adverse effects of isolation on the elderly; novel mechanisms of long-COVID dyspnea; and the first single-cell atlas of the human COPD lung, among many others.

On a personal note, I’m so proud of my team that I tend to take for granted that they feel acknowledged. This year, I would like to ask you to help me get them recognized by voting for us on the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals Survey. If you are willing – please vote for Yale New Haven Hospital in the Doximity survey. Reputation means a lot, and recognition means even more – and you can help us.

Lastly, the past two years have been too long. I hope that many of you will be able to attend the American Thoracic Society International Conference in San Francisco – it would be so good to hear great talks and discussions and most importantly to see each other.

Looking forward to us getting together!
