General Overview
The faculty at Yale School of Medicine Section of Infectious Diseases are dedicated to improving global health outcomes by integrating cutting-edge medical education, research, and patient care. We aim to foster global collaborations that generate robust data to address health disparities and advance health equity, striving to cultivate a world where quality healthcare is accessible to all.
Objectives
- Collaborative Research and Innovation: To collaborate with U.S. and international partners and organizations to conduct groundbreaking medical research that informs global health policy and practice, creating innovative solutions to the pressing health challenges worldwide.
- Capacity Building and Education: To foster the development of global health professionals through comprehensive training and education programs, encouraging the exchange of knowledge and skills, thus enhancing research capacity and healthcare delivery systems in underserved settings.
- Promotion of Health Equity: To actively work towards diminishing health disparities by advocating for health policies that ensure equitable access to quality healthcare, fostering a global culture that values health and access to health care as a fundamental human right.
Clinical services
The Yale Infectious Disease clinics offer services to underserved patients in Connecticut. We also care for those who are preparing for international travel and for those who may require medical care upon return.
Research
Our faculty are engaged in rigorous research programs funded by NIH, CDC, HRSA, and foundations to address infectious diseases and related work including babesia, covid-19, leptospirosis, malaria, tuberculosis, and vaccines. We conduct research at the intersection of HIV and aging, HIV and alcohol, HIV and opioid use, and HIV and non-communicable diseases, including a strong focus on HIV prevention. Our multidisciplinary faculty conduct basic science, epidemiological, translational, and patient-oriented studies including randomized clinical trials. We focus on strengthening health systems and using implementation science to bring scientific advances to patients. We work across health systems around the world, including Brazil, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, India, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Liberia, Malawi, Malaysia, Nepal, Peru, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, and Ukraine. Given that there are gaps domestically as well and that “local is global”, we also work with vulnerable populations in Connecticut and throughout the U.S.
Educational programs
Through the Office of Global Health at Yale School of Medicine, trainees can access 6-week clinical rotations through the Global Health Scholars Program with vetted partners around the world. In collaboration with the Yale School of Public Health, trainees are eligible for the Global Health Equity Scholars Program, a 12-month Fogarty research training fellowship conducted at selected institutions in low-and-middle-income countries (LMIC), with several faculty serving as mentors. Yale trainees and faculty have access to pilot grant funding, networking, and career consultation through Yale Institute for Global Health and Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS. Yale Infectious Diseases also has strong partnerships with the Yale School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases, the Center for Methods in Implementation and Prevention Science, and the Yale Faculty Global HIV/AIDS Research Network (GARNER).
