Silvia Vilarinho, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine (digestive diseases) and of pathology; was named the 2023 Leah Lowenstein Award recipient at the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) Commencement ceremony on Monday, May 22, 2023.
The award is in memory of the late Leah Lowenstein, a medical educator and first female dean of a co-educational medical school, and is given annually to a faculty member who is the model of a medical educator whose humane teaching reaches and influences all students regardless of gender, race, or socioeconomic background.
Nominees of Vilarinho noted her commitment to her students and diversity, and inclusion throughout “the admissions process as an associate director of the MD/PhD program, and during recruitment of the physician scientist training program.”
One nominator stated, “Despite Dr. Vilarinho's various roles and hats as a physician-scientist, she still makes time for teaching rounds and participation as a lecture in the pre-clinical clerkship period and participates in teaching clinical skills workshops for students in their PhD role.”
Stephen Wang, MD, MPH, a PGY-3 resident in the Department of Internal Medicine’s Primary Care Residency Program was honored with the Betsy Winters House Staff Award, along with Justin Nguyen, MD, a chief resident in the Department of Urology.
