Message from Chief Loren Laine, MD

February 2024

Dear Colleagues

I hope the new year has started out well for you. For many, the start of the new year is an opportunity to reflect on personal and professional achievements and opportunities for growth. As I look back over the past year, I am exceptionally proud of our section and all that we have achieved.

For example, last summer, we opened the GI and Pancreatic Cancer Prevention Program, which serves as a home for cancer prevention within the Digestive Diseases Section. We also launched The Liver Home, a new outpatient program that provides multidisciplinary care to individuals living with cirrhosis. And in research, a number of our junior faculty received new research support, including federally funded career development awards.

Our team and our achievements are top of mind this month, as we vote for the best gastroenterology and GI surgery programs in the U.S. News & World Report 2024-2025 rankings. Patients and their families have many choices available, and these rankings help them decide where to go for their care. I encourage you to take a moment to cast your vote today in support of our section and our colleagues. Voting is conducted through Doximity and will remain open through the end of March.

I encourage all faculty and staff to begin using our new Section of Digestive Diseases Team (on the Microsoft Teams app), designed to improve and facilitate communication among members of the section. This will allow us to readily share announcements, achievements, policies, and other information with our colleagues. We started this channel to provide quicker and easier sharing of information relevant to our team.

I also want to thank our Social Events Committee for their hard work as they begin to plan social events matching the varied interests of our section’s members. This initiative was strongly recommended by participants in the section’s retreat last year to help overcome the fact that our section’s members and activities are so spread out. Social gatherings are a great way to help bring us together.

In closing, I consider myself very fortunate to work with such talented and dedicated people. Thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Loren Laine, MD

Bile Duct Function and Disease Highlighted in New Research Study

Recent research from the Gupta Lab, led by Serrena Singh and supervised by Vikas Gupta, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine (digestive diseases), provides insights into the extrahepatic bile ducts. These bile ducts outside of the liver are a critical but poorly understood component of the human digestive system. This study, which was published in the journal Development Cell, marks a significant step forward in understanding diseases affecting these ducts, such as primary sclerosing cholangitis and cholangiocarcinoma.
