    Extensive Research Description

    Dr. Grauer directs an active research group that focuses on clinical outcomes of spine and orthopaedic patients. In an era of striving to optimize patient outcomes, it is crucial that we learn from our patients to advance clinical care.

    National databases track large numbers of patients and allow for the study of such outcomes. Dr. Grauer works closely with his student and resident team to draw clinically meaningful messages from large data sets. What patients will do best from an intervention? Which technique is best for which person? Who is at risk for an adverse event? These are just some of the questions being addressed.

    As with any type of research, studies based on national databases have both advantages and limitations. Balancing the use of such databases, Dr. Grauer’s team works to delineate the limitation of national database work and strives to optimize studies based on their data. In doing so, they work to draw the most meaningful and valid conclusions possible.

    In addition to the above-noted studies, Dr. Grauer’s team is active with studies looking at patients treated locally. With studies evaluating diagnostic imaging modalities, patient characteristics, and patient outcomes, they are able to study more detailed local data.

    Overall, Dr. Grauer mentors many Yale medical students and fellows in performing research studies. The team has received multiple awards. He and his group have given over 450 research talks at national and international meetings, and co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers.
