Clinical Fellowships

The Yale Department of Anesthesia provides a variety of clinical fellowships. We offer a wide range of supervised opportunities for fellowship trainees.

Head and Neck Anesthesiology Fellowship

Program Duration: 12 months

Basic Overview:

  • The Head and Neck Anesthesiology Fellowship is a one-year fellowship following a four-year anesthesiology residency. Fellows will gain concentrated clinical experience providing anesthesia for ENT/head and neck surgical cases and interventional pulmonology cases. Fellows will also rotate with laryngologists from the Section of Otolaryngology where they will learn about airway pathology and practice flexible laryngoscopy and tracheostomy.
  • In addition to rotations, fellows will spend 1 day per week assigned as the “airway fellow” to assist faculty throughout the York Street Campus with any difficult or potentially difficult OR and non-OR airway management, 1 day per week in pursuit of scholarly activity, and 1 day per week as a general attending anesthesiologist.
  • Specific objectives:
    • Expertly perform anesthetic management of common otolaryngology cases including: head and neck cancer resection (including cases with free tissue transfer reconstruction), thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, parotidectomy, endoscopic sinus surgery, otology, operative laryngoscopy, and laryngeal and tracheal resection and reconstruction.
    • Master communication skills to serve as a liaison between the departments of anesthesiology and otolaryngology as it pertains to the plan and management of head and neck patient care.
    • Master crisis resource management as it pertains to otolaryngology and airway emergencies; deploy resources such as staff (anesthesiology and otherwise) and emergency equipment and lead a multidisciplinary team of anesthesiologists, otolaryngologists, perioperative nurses and technicians.

  • Number of Required Lectures per Week
    • There will be two formal didactic sessions per month for the fellowship. Additional teaching methods include:
      • Intraoperative case-based teaching
      • Monthly journal club
      • Attend TART reviews at the Rapid Response and Resuscitation committee meetings
      • Emergency invasive airway placement training course
      • Flexible bronchoscopy simulator
      • High fidelity simulation
  • Research Involvement:
    • The minimum requirement to be met for scholarship includes:
      • Submit at least one case report or other project per semester to a peer reviewed journal and/or a meeting such as the American Society of Anesthesiology annual meeting, New York State Society of Anesthesiologists’ Post Graduate Assembly, Society for Airway Management, or Society for Head and Neck Anesthesia.
      • Participate in the Difficult Airway workshop during the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists’ Post Graduate Assembly

Minimum Requirements:

To be considered for this program applicants must be enrolled in or have completed an ACGME accredited anesthesiology residency program or be board certified in anesthesiology from an ABA-approved certifying body."
