Department of Anesthesiology
The Yale Department of Anesthesiology, founded in 1968, is a national leader in clinical care, medical education, and medical education. Over the decades, the department has grown significantly in the scope, volume, and sophistication of its anesthetic practice, alongside a parallel expansion of its medical education and research programs across the basic, translational, and clinical sciences.
The department's physicians, nurses, and staff collaborate with surgical and medical colleagues to deliver safe, cutting-edge perioperative care in operating rooms, procedural areas, specialty units (including Obstetrics, Pediatrics, and Pain), and intensive care units. Comprehensive preoperative assessment and innovative approaches to acute and chronic pain management extend that care across the full patient continuum.
People are the department's greatest asset. By drawing on the creative talents of its research faculty, the expertise of its clinicians, and the inquiry of its trainees, the department works to transform care delivery and ensure optimal outcomes for every patient. Panelists will trace how fluid and solutes leave the brain, why that traffic is shaped by sleep and by anesthesia, and how it intersects with the amyloid and tau pathology of Alzheimer's disease. The conversation runs from imaging and preclinical models to the operating room, where lympho-venous bypass — a technique developed for limb lymphedema — raises a provocative question: can drainage downstream of the brain be engineered?
