Welcome to Anesthesiology
The Department of Anesthesia, founded in 1968, quickly established itself as a national leader in academics as well as clinical anesthesiology and resident education. Over the past four decades, we have grown dramatically both in the volume and scope of anesthetic practice. That growth saw a concurrent expansion of both medical education programs and research activities in the basic, translational and clinical realms.
We have 57 residents in our training program, headed by Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz. We offer fellowships in ambulatory, cardiac, pediatrics, obstetrics, regional, intensive care and pain management and participate in the Yale Resident Scholar’s Program, which enables residents to pursue a research career during their residency training.
The Department of Anesthesiology has a long tradition of clinical fellowships. We offer a wide range of supervised opportunities for fellowship trainees. All our sub-specialty teams collaborate with the corresponding surgical groups to train fellows, provide research opportunities, and conduct quality assessments.
