Residency Curriculum Overview

When you join the Yale Anesthesiology residency, you're joining a family — one that trains outstanding physicians while supporting each other every step of the way.

Yale New Haven Hospital is proud to offer 21 categorical and 2 advanced positions each year. Our categorical track is a four-year educational continuum approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology — starting with a Clinical Base Year of non-anesthesia training, followed by three years of hands-on clinical anesthesia training (CA-1, CA-2, and CA-3). Advanced position residents join us for those same three years after completing their Clinical Base Year at another ACGME-accredited institution.

Whether you're applying for a categorical position, an advanced position, or both, your first year (PGY-1) of training immerses you in surgical and medical subspecialties, along with rotations in critical care, emergency medicine, and anesthesiology — building the clinical foundation you'll draw on throughout your anesthesiology training.

From there, you'll build a strong foundation in the operating suite and perioperative period, spending twelve months throughout CA-1 and CA-2 mastering the fundamentals. As early as the second half of your CA-1 year, you'll begin subspecialty rotations tailored to your interests, and by CA-3, you'll take on deeper subspecialty work and real leadership responsibility. Along the way, you'll experience the full breadth of surgical procedures, participating in roughly 400 to 500 anesthetics each year.
