Sydney Butts, MD ’98, appointed to Interim Chair at SUNY Downstate

Sydney C. Butts, M.D. ’98, will lead the department of Otolaryngology at SUNY Downstate, as interim chair, effective July 1, 2022.

Butts started at Downstate as a faculty member in 2009 and is currently an associate professor of otolaryngology. She currently serves as vice-chair and division chief of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Butts has lectured and presented nationally and internationally on cleft lip/palate reconstruction and maxillofacial trauma in children and adults. She has lent her surgical efforts to international humanitarian trips, including missions to Vietnam, Rwanda, and Liberia.

She received her medical degree from Yale in 1998 and completed her residency in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Einstein and a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at SUNY Upstate Medical University. She is board-certified in otolaryngology and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Butts’ research interests include better defining the risk factors for congenital craniofacial anomalies and acquired facial deformities, and the outcomes of patients who are affected with these disorders.
