New Alumni Fund Chair Encourages Gratitude and Participation

August 29, 2017

Philip Lebowitz, M.D. ’72, began his tenure as a YSM Alumni Fund agent in 2010, and in July 2017, was appointed to Chair of Agents. For the Alumni Fund, Dr. Lebowitz solicits a large cohort of classmates and through his efforts has helped that group expand its participation rate as a consistent and supportive part of the School of Medicine donor base. He is also actively engaged in YSM alumni relations as a member of the AYAM Executive Committee. He served as the Chair of his class’s 35th, 40th, and 45th Reunion Gift Committees and this past spring participated in our first alumni volunteer phonathon. Dr. Lebowitz has served on the university’s Alumni Fund board since July 2016 and is recognized as a Yale Legacy Partner for his generous planned gift intention.

A consistent annual fund donor for 30 years and a leadership donor for more than two decades, Phil is a perennial advocate for the Alumni Fund. He appreciates the important role annual giving plays in the life of the school and understands that strong annual fund participation reflects alumni attitudes towards the school and their YSM experiences. Phil is one of our most loyal and engaging volunteers, and we are excited to work with him in the coming year.

As Chair, Phil will continue to engage volunteers to foster relationships and strengthen connections to the school. He will support and mentor class agents and collaborate with staff in their efforts to raise unrestricted financial support for the medical school. Dr. Lebowitz’s term as Fund Chair will be two years, which can be renewed.

“As my classmates and I reflected on our time in medical school from the vantage point of our 45th reunion this past June, we uniformly appreciated the formative experience that it was for each of us. Yale School of Medicine prepared us (or allowed us to prepare ourselves) for our varied careers and, looking back, we could only be grateful. That gratitude, for me, has translated itself into a pledge of honor to give back to Yale a measure of what I feel the school has given me over the course of my career and my life. I hope that all alumni share that same feeling, and I will be talking with many of you over the course of the year to hear your thoughts and ideas.” – Phil Lebowitz, M.D. ’72.

The former YSM Chair of Agents, Lillian Oshva, M.D. ’96, has recently been elected as the Vice President of the AYAM Executive Board. We are so grateful for her service as Chair and tireless efforts on behalf of the Alumni Fund. On behalf of the Association of Yale Alumni in Medicine, we congratulate both Phil and Lillian in their new volunteer leadership roles.
