Herzog's Medical Alma Mater Honors Her
Erica Herzog, MD, PhD, John Slade Ely Professor of Medicine (Pulmonary) and professor of pathology, has been named a 2024 Distinguished Medical Alumni Award recipient by the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Herzog is being recognized for her contributions to the advancement of medicine through scientific accomplishments in the field of pulmonary fibrosis.
Department of Internal Medicine Presents Inaugural Voluntary Faculty Awards
The Department of Internal Medicine recently presented its inaugural Voluntary Faculty Awards, which honored voluntary faculty who are involved in teaching medical students, physician associate students, residents, and fellows across Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Health System-affiliated hospitals. The five recipients are listed here.
Guerrero-Medina Earns a SACNAS Award
Giovanna Guerrero-Medina, PhD, director of the Yale Ciencia Program; director of diversity, equity & inclusion for the Wu Tsai Institute; and executive director of Ciencia Puerto Rico, has received the Outstanding Research and Professional Mentor Award from SACNAS, the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science. SACNAS says each awardee is proof that diversity and excellence in STEM not only matter, but are possible, and each has a demonstrated record of encouraging historically underrepresented minority students or professionals to pursue advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or a related field.
Kandil Leads Effort That Earns a Center of Excellence Designation
Sarah Kandil, MD, associate professor of pediatrics (critical care), laid much of the groundwork for Yale New Haven Children's Hospital's designation as a Center of Excellence in Pediatric Sedation, by the Society for Pediatric Sedation. Kandil worked on the application, collected data, and led behind-the-scenes quality improvement projects that resulted in the designation.
Khera-led Company's Technology Receives an FDA Designation
Ensight-AI, a company founded by a group led by Rohan Khera, MD, MS, assistant professor of medicine and of biostatistics (health informatics), has received a Breakthrough Device Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for a technology it developed for early detection of transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy. The condition is often underdiagnosed because of nonspecific symptoms, and disproportionately affects Black individuals.
