Intracellular injection of a single thalamocortical neuron (to right) reveals that these cells give off axon collaterals in the perigeniculate nucleus as the parent axon extends into the optic radiation on its way to the visual cortex (to left).

Together, these results indicate that in the geniculate slice, the connections between the perigeniculate and dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus are maintained. Perigeniculate neurons densely innervate the LGNd, and LGNd thalamocortical cells innervate the PGN. These connections are the basis for spindle wave generation.
