Current NLM Funded Predoctoral Trainees

Edel Aron

NLM Predoctoral Trainee: 9/1/19 –

Research Supervisor: Steven Kleinstein, PhD (Immunobiology, Pathology)

Research: Edel Aron is currently in the second year of graduate training. She is focusing on developing computational methods capable of inferring networks of interactions present in the skin lesions of patients with Lyme disease. Her goal is to better understand the nature of the lesions and the immunological response to the disease as well as to be able to predict its clinical course.

Egbert Castro

NLM Predoctoral Trainee: 9/1/19 –

Research Supervisor: Smita Krishnaswamy, PhD (Computer Science, Genetics)

Research: Egbert Castro is currently in the second year of graduate training. He is currently working on developing informative and interpretable encoding strategies for biomolecules using machine learning. The overall goal of his work is to create better methods analyze high-dimensional, high-throughput data in order to discover underlying relationships between structure and function.

David Chang

NLM Predoctoral Trainee: 9/1/18 –

Research Supervisor: Cynthia Brandt, MD, MPH (Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology), Hongyu Zhao, PhD (Biostatistics, Genetics, Statistics and Data Science)

Research: David Chang is currently in the fourth year of graduate training. David's research focuses on the application of natural language processing and machine learning methods in the clinical domain. With an emphasis on clinical text and medical domain knowledge, David integrates recent advances in NLP and graph representation learning to develop systems that can process text data in a way that incorporates domain knowledge and reflects the state-of-the-art in NLP.

Evan Cudone

NLM Predoctoral Trainee: 9/1/18 -

Research Supervisor: Robert McDougal, PhD (Biostatistics)

Research: Evan Cudone is currently in the third year of graduate training. He focuses on designing methods for neuroinformatics, particularly to investigate the use of models in neuroscience. This primarily involves leveraging large academic text corpora with natural language processing and ontology learning. Current investigations include tracking the use of model organisms in therapeutics development for alzheimer's disease, defining differences in the language used in computational neuroscience literature compared to the broader field of neuroscience, and systematically building domain-specific ontologies to facilitate literature exploration and meta-analysis.

J. Nick Fisk

NLM Predoctoral Trainee: 9/1/18 –

Research Supervisor: Jeffrey Townsend, PhD (Biostatistics, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology)

Research: J. Nick Fisk is currently in the third year of graduate training. He works in the application of evolutionary and phylogenetic methods in biomedical and precision medicine contexts. Specifically, Nick’s research aims to elucidate the mechanisms of resistance of tumors to chemotherapies and the shifting evolutionary landscape directing that resistance. Fisk is also broadly interested in other problems that could benefit from the application of an evolutionary paradigm and actively develops software to bring those methods to other groups.

Kevin Lopez

NLM Predoctoral Trainee: 9/1/15 –

Department: Interdepartmental Program in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Research

Research Supervisor: Michael Krauthammer, PhD (Pathology) and Cynthia Brandt, MD (Emergency Medicine and Anesthesiology)

Research: Kevin Lopez is currently in the 5th year of graduate training. Kevin is working on image classification using deep learning and convolutional neural networks. He is also working on expanding the capabilities of Yale Image Finder by applying deep learning methods to classify images from PubMed publications.
