April 07, 2015

Leslie M. Rickey, MD, MPH

President, SWIU

New Haven, Connecticut

On behalf of the Society of Women in Urology (SWIU), I am pleased to announce the CME (continuing medical education) and networking events hosted by the SWIU during the upcoming AUA Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

The Annual Breakfast Meeting will take place on Sunday, May 17 (6:30-9:00 a.m., New Orleans Morial Convention Center). During the breakfast meeting the 2015 Elisabeth Pickett Research Award winner will be announced and will present her research project. All female urology residents and fellows are eligible for the Pickett award, and application details can be found on the SWIU website (http://www.swiu .org/).

We will also present the Society of Women in Urology/Society for Basic Urologic Research Award for Excellence in Urological Research. This award recognizes women sci entists with an accomplished back ground of basic science urological research.

The keynote speaker at the break fast meeting will be M.A. "Tonette" Krousel-Wood, MD, Professor of Epidemiology, Associate Dean and Associate Provost for Health Sciences at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. We are delighted to welcome a local Tulane faculty to speak at our meet ing. In addition to being a nation ally recognized expert in preven tive medicine, Dr. Krousel-Wood directs the Faculty Development and Mentoring program at Tulane. She will be speaking about her career path and her leadership role in the medical school as well as the role of mentoring in faculty development.

The SWIU Women Leaders in Urology Forum will be held on Monday, May 18 (5:00-6:00 p.m., Hilton Riverside). I will be moderating a distinguished panel on "Controversies in Treatment of Female Stress Urinary Incontinence ." Although female incontinence is one of the most common conditions that urologists evaluate, surgical interven tion that seeks to change the function of an organ is often far from straight forward. As the population of older women increases during the next few decades, it is critical that providers understand the positive as well as the negative repercussions of our proce dures along with how to approach complicated cases.

Donna Deng, MD, Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Francisco, will ad dress the treatment of recurrent in continence as well as best practices for the evaluation and treatment of patients in whom initial surgical intervention fails. Una Lee, MD, Assistant Professor at Virginia Mason, will discuss the role of urodynamics the modern practice of female incontinence.

Finally, Melissa Kaufman, MD, PhD, Associate Professor at Vanderbilt and principal investigator of the North American trial of Autologous Muscle Derived Cells for Urinary Sphincter Repair, will inform the audience of the latest science and advances in stem cell injection for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. The panel discussion will conclude with case discussions and an opportunity for questions from the audience.

Immediately following the forum the SWIU Networking Reception will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. During the reception we will present the Christina Manthos Mentoring Award, which was established by the SWIU to recognize those men or women who demonstrate outstand ing mentoring skills in supporting and fostering the careers of female urologists . We look forward to pre senting this meaningful award, and the networking reception is a great time to reconnect with colleagues from across the country.

Please join us for these SWIU events in New Orleans.
