Introducing YCSC community members & new hires: Meet Teresa Muñoz & Michael McCarthy

December 13, 2024

The Yale Child Study Center (YCSC) – which serves as the department of child psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine – welcomes and introduces new community members on an on-going basis. All new faculty, staff, and trainees are invited to share bios and photos upon joining the department, and those who wish to participate are announced approximately monthly. This month, meet new visiting scholar Teresa Bollaín Muñoz and returning staff member Michael F. McCarthy.

Teresa Bollaín Muñoz joined the YCSC as a visiting scholar with the Center for Traumatic Stress and Recovery on September 1. She is a medical resident specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry at Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Madrid, Spain. Her work focuses on helping young patients navigate complex emotional and psychological challenges, with a particular emphasis on addressing childhood trauma. Beyond her clinical practice, Muñoz has been deeply involved in community-based programs, fostering collaboration across various disciplines to build comprehensive mental health support systems for children and adolescents. As a visiting scholar, she is working to expand her expertise by enriching her knowledge and furthering her commitment to advancing trauma-informed care for young people.

Michael F. McCarthy, PhD is not new to the YCSC, having previously worked for the Early Childhood Peace Consortium and the Center for Emotional Intelligence. He also initially joined the Education Collaboratory as a consultant before transitioning to a postdoctoral associate in November. With a PhD in education and specialization in teaching and curriculum from the University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education and Human Development, his research interests focus on the social and emotional development that occurs within families of children with intellectual disabilities, with attention on the emotional intelligence and functioning among neurotypical siblings. McCarthy’s research interests have brought him to South America, East Africa, and the Middle East. He also spent several summers at the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club developing and teaching an interactive summer learning experience to elementary and middle school students.
