  • Gary V. Desir, MD, is the Paul B. Beeson Professor of Medicine and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine.
  • Born in Haiti, Desir was the first person of African descent appointed to department chair at YSM in 2016.
  • An accomplished nephrologist, Desir has also been a champion in areas of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • In early 2020, Desir was named Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity for Yale University.
  • In this role, he helps guide and support the appointment & development of a diverse, excellent faculty across all schools.
  • Desir is also co-chair of President Salovey's Committee on Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging.
  • The Department of Internal Medicine has its own DEI committee that's committed to faculty and staff.
