On May 20, Yale School of Medicine (YSM) celebrated the Class of 2019 at its commencement ceremonies. Along with honoring the 87 graduates, three faculty and one resident from the Department of Internal Medicine were recognized with the following prestigious awards:

  • The Charles W. Bohmfalk Prize for teaching in the clinical sciences went to Dana Dunne, MD, associate professor of medicine (infectious diseases). Recognized for her kindness and dedication, Dunne was chosen by a committee of faculty and students for this annual honor. Dunne “exudes genuine interest in the wellbeing of students and the quality of their educational experience,” said one nominator.
  • Michael DiGiovanna, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine (medical oncology) won The Alvan R. Feinstein Award for outstanding teaching of clinical skills. Per his nomination letter, DiGiovanna ‘has been one of YSM's most important assets contributing to the training and education of our medical and graduate students, as a leader, a teacher, and as a dedicated and extremely well-regarded clinical mentor.’
  • The Francis Gilman Blake Award for outstanding teaching of the medical sciences was given to Gerard Kerins, MD, MPA, associate clinical professor of medicine (geriatrics). The recipient of this award is chosen by the YSM Class of 2019.
  • Emily Pinto Taylor, MD, a fourth-year resident in medicine/pediatrics received The Betsy Winters House Staff Award, along with Todd Spock, MD, otolaryngology resident. Also chosen by the graduating class, Taylor and Spock were recognized as members of the house staff who’d made the most significant contributions to the education of medical students.

“The commitment shown by Drs. Dunne, DiGiovanna, Kerins, and Taylor to the education of our future physicians has been noted within our department for some time,” said Gary V. Desir, MD, Paul B. Beeson Professor of Medicine, chair of Internal Medicine and chief, Internal Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital. “I am happy that these educators were honored by their colleagues and students with this well-deserved recognition.”
