On June 12, we held our first Department of Medicine Mentorship and Sponsorship retreat for section chiefs and senior faculty who advise on promotions within sections. We discussed various topics, including mentoring across differences, mentorship training, the FDAQ process, the new promotion tracks, and the concept of career sponsorship.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Update (June 2024)
As we prepare to onboard hundreds of new GME trainees to Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) and Yale School of Medicine (YSM), let's reflect on our successful recruitment season. Across all residency programs within the Department of Medicine, our intern class comprises at least 31% who identify as underrepresented in medicine (URiM), a 35% increase from last year's intern class, which comprised 23% who identify as URiM. Across all the school and hospital programs, our incoming intern class will include at least 28% URiM individuals. As we get to know our new interns, we will likely encounter more individuals identifying as URiM beyond the ERAS data.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Update (May 2024)
Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) had an outstanding residency match result. Across the three residency programs within the Department of Medicine (Traditional Medicine, Primary Care, and Medicine-Pediatrics), our incoming intern class will comprise at least 34% URiM individuals. Across all the YSM and YNHH programs, our incoming intern class will comprise at least 28% URiM individuals.

Building Capacity in Medical Students to Care for Transgender and Gender Diverse Patients
A small group of Yale medical and public health students collaborated with faculty mentors to develop a clinical skills-based simulation session on caring for transgender and gender-diverse patients, in which all MD students will participate in during their clinical year.

Last weekend, our 14-person delegation visited Howard University College of Medicine. In addition to showcasing all the excellent GME training opportunities at Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and Yale New Haven Hospital, we held a YSM meet and greet and Q&A session for students, and we engaged the students in mock interviews. All the sessions went exceedingly well. Thanks to all staff, residents, and faculty members who ensured the weekend and sessions went seamlessly.
