Donna Windish, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine (general internal medicine), director, Resident Research, Yale Primary Care Residency Program and program director, General Internal Medicine Medical Education Fellowship has been awarded the 2019 Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Mid-Career Education Mentorship Award.

According to the SGIM, the Mid-Career Education Mentorship Award recognizes ‘mentoring activities of general medicine educators.'

“It is a great honor to receive this national award for educational mentorship given the many other educators who serve as mentors locally, regionally and nationally. I truly covet and enjoy being a mentor to many young educators and hope they will in turn mentor others,” said Windish.

Windish was nominated by three colleagues at Yale School of Medicine (YSM), Patrick G. O’Connor, MD, MPH, Dan Adams and Amanda Adams Professor of General Medicine and chief (general internal medicine); Stephen Huot, MD, PhD, professor of medicine (nephrology), associate dean for graduate medical education (YSM) and designated institutional official (YNHH) and Katie Gielissen, MD, MHS-Med Ed, instructor (general internal medicine).

“Dr. Windish is an outstanding clinician educator who has developed an impressive track record of supporting and nurturing education scholarship among trainees and peers. She is a go-to person for residents, fellows and faculty who are seeking advice and guidance for education scholarship. She has developed an infrastructure to support advancing the field of medical education through a creative and exciting Medical Education Fellowship Program,” said O’Connor and Huot in their recommendation letter.

Gielissen worked with Windish throughout her time at YSM.

“During my Yale General Internal Medicine Medical Education Fellowship training, I grew to know Donna in a new light: as a mentor and scholar. Over the course of her career, Donna has garnered a wealth of expertise in statistics and study design, providing a sounding board for those who work with her. Most notably, she is well-known amongst the housestaff as a faculty mentor who helps residents and fellows 'gets things done,’” said Gielissen.

The award will be presented at a ceremony during the 2019 SGIM Annual Meeting in May 2019 in Washington, D.C.
