Special Lecture: Substance Use in Jordan: Current Situation, Treatment, and the Role of the Pharmacist

Join the Yale Program in Addiction Medicine in partnership with the Yale-University of Jordan Joint Training Program in Addiction Medicine for a special lecture session with guest speaker, Mayyada Wazaify, BScPharm, PhD.

Title: Substance Use In Jordan - Current Situation, Treatment, and the Role of the Pharmacist

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the main substances of use, prevalence of use and demographic profile of people who use drugs in Jordan.
  2. Highlight the current facilities and methods used to treat substance use in Jordan.
  3. Discuss the role of the pharmacist (in Jordan and in general) in identification, prevention and management of substance use: where we are and where we want to be.


Following the noon lecture, in-person attendees are invited to join an open-forum meet and greet with Professor Wazaify and colleagues in Brady Auditorium from 1pm-2pm. Coffee and tea will be served.


Directions to Brady Auditorium (B131): Enter the main entrance of the Brady Memorial Laboratory, 310 Cedar Street, and the auditorium is directly in front of you on the far side of the foyer, auditorium entrances are located in the alcoves to both the left and the right.


Mayyada Wazaify, BScPharm, PhD, graduated from Queen’s University of Belfast in 2003. Since 2004 she has been a Professor of Clinical and Pharmacy Practice at the University of Jordan. From 2012-2015 Professor Wazaify was a visiting lecturer at the University of Bath and in 2019 she was appointed Adjunct Professor in Social Pharmacy at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Professor Wazaify’s work focuses primarily on prescription and over-the-counter substance misuse, including enforcement of the role of the pharmacist in prevention, identification, and management of inappropriate use of medications and treatment of substance use disorder. Professor Wazaify has consulted for the Jordan Food and Drug Administration and the Jordan Anti-Narcotics Department for close to two decades; her research contributed to the scheduling of alprazolam in 2013 and pregabalin in 2017. She received the Distinguished Researcher Award at the University of Jordan in both 2011 and 2012 and in 2014 she received the Best Scientific Research Award from the Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar. In 2018, she was appointed as an advisor to the World Health Organization’s 41st Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD). Professor Wazaify is a member of the Society for The Study of Addiction and serves on the editorial boards of several international academic journals including Substance Use and Misuse and the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice. She is PI and co-PI of several local and international research and capacity building grants, many in partnership with other academic institutions such as Oxford Brookes University and the Yale Schools of Medicine and Public Health. Professor Wazaify has supervised more than 35 postgraduate students and served as an internal and external examiner for more than 25 students (Msc. and PhD) from the University of Jordan and other institutions. Proudly, she is the co-founder of the Pharmacy Students Research Club at the University of Jordan and she served as their first academic mentor from 2013-2018.
