IWGCE Subcommittees

Equity Subcommittee

Organize journal clubs and discussions during the academic year to foster conversations between department members on the culture of science and how to create a supportive and engaged culture whereby all members thrive.

Executive Subcommittee

  • Invite annual speaker to educate community on issues relevant to the goals of IWGCE.
  • Give mentoring awards to trainees based on a competition whereby individuals that a person mentored nominates them for the award. Holds summer mentoring workshop for trainees mentoring summer students.
  • Receives departmental feedback by conducting surveys and holds townhalls to share results and discuss possible actions.
  • Annual newsletter on new members to the departmental and departmental activities, events, etc.

Outreach Subcommittee

  • Communicate with trainees regarding STEM outreach opportunities within the New Haven community.
  • Plan the department's ‘Day of Immunology’ started in Spring 2022, in which New Haven high schoolers spend a Saturday in the department. Activities include interactive workshops, lab tours, keynote speaker, and career panel.
  • Establish initiatives that increase access to educational materials on basic immunology principles for students of all levels and the general public.
  • Provide programming for summer students training in research labs

Postdoc/Social Subcommittee

  • Organize networking and social events for department trainees.
  • Activities have included hikes to East Rock Park and walks through the Yale Golf Club.

Trainee Transition Subcommittee

  • Facilitate the transition of new graduate students to the department and living in New Haven by establishing a buddy program whereby each new student is assigned both a current graduate student and a faculty buddy for their first year.

Well-Being Subcommittee

  • Organize workshops, discussions, and luncheons to create a better sense of belonging.
  • Collect input on the state of Yale Health mental health services for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and report feedback to the DGS.

Engagement Subcommittee

  • Maintain and strengthen the departmental culture of connection and engagement.
  • Periodically arranges teas whereby members can discuss their concerns and ideas.
  • Arranges small group dinners between trainees and faculty during the academic year.
