Dr. Kombo has made a significant impact in our department, consistently excelling in her clinical work, where she is highly regarded for her expertise and compassionate approach to patient care. She is known for providing comprehensive, cutting-edge care, while building strong, trusting relationships with her patients. Beyond her clinical work at Yale, Dr. Kombo also serves as Chief of Ophthalmology at the VA, where she has been instrumental in advancing care for our nation’s veterans, introducing innovative practices, and enhancing patient outcomes.
In addition to her clinical excellence, Dr. Kombo is an outstanding educator who has been a pillar of our medical student education program. Her innovative teaching methods, coupled with her mentorship, have inspired countless students to pursue careers in ophthalmology. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to teaching and mentorship, Dr. Kombo was honored as the recipient of the prestigious 2022 Leah Lowenstein Award, which celebrates faculty members who demonstrate a commitment to humane and compassionate medical education. This award highlights her dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment, where students from all backgrounds feel empowered to thrive. The residents have also recognized Dr. Kombo’s dedication to education and awarded her the Bruce Shields Resident Teaching Award twice.
