Training Locations and Facilities

Yale Eye Center

The Yale Eye Center constitutes the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at Yale University School of Medicine. The Eye Center recently moved to the Temple Medical Building on 40 Temple Street. Located on the 3rd floor of the building, the Eye Center features 28 fully equipped exam rooms that are grouped in pods of three. Each pod will have an exam room equipped with viewing tubes on the slit-lamps for teaching. There are two photography suites including OCT (Stratus and spectral domain versions), fluorescein angiography and fundus photography. Additional diagnostic technology includes HRT-3, UBM, Visante Anterior Segment OCT, Orbscan and ERG & EOG testing. Therapeutic lasers include the Argon laser, the Yag laser, SLT laser, and diode lasers. There are four Humphrey visual field analyzers and a Goldmann perimeter in the office. A minor procedure room is equipped to handle anterior segment and ophthalmic plastic procedures, and as an added feature has video recording capabilities built into the overhead lighting.

Hospital-based Resident Clinic

The Eye Center still has a presence on the main medical campus with two ophthalmologic lanes to serve as the location of the Hospital-based Resident Clinic. These are currently located at the Dana Building at 789 Howard Street on the second floor. The facilities accommodate ambulatory and in-patient consults, as well as minor ophthalmic plastics and anterior segment surgical procedures.

Yale-New Haven Hospital

The Ophthalmology outpatient surgery section at Yale-New Haven Hospital contains three contemporary ophthalmic surgery operating rooms with ceiling-mounted Zeiss microscopes. A wide variety of phacoemulsification and vitrectomy units are available. Residents have access to state-of-the-art foldable intraocular lens systems. Additionally, two ophthalmic surgical suites for anterior segment surgery are in use at the Temple Medical Building on the second floor. Its proximity to the Eye Center makes it convenient for patients and staff.

West Haven VA Medical Center

The West Haven VA Medical Center is a 259-bed acute care facility which contains a renovated five-lane ophthalmology clinic. The VAMC is located five miles from Yale and is connected by a shuttle bus system. The clinic is equipped with Humphrey and Octopus perimeters, fundus photography, fundus OCT and an argon/YAG laser. Another argon laser is present in the operating room for vitreoretinal surgery procedures. The ophthalmology operating room at the VA Medical Center contains an excellent ophthalmic microscope, as well as up-to-date phacoemulsification units, and foldable intraocular lenses. Pars plana vitrectomy and scleral buckling equipment is also available. The VAMC houses a regional VA low vision in-patient service staffed by a dedicated group of low vision specialists.

Hill Health Center

The Hill Health Center is community-based outpatient clinic addressing the medical needs of the underserved in the greater New Haven area. The Hill Health Center has three fully equipped ophthalmic lanes and offers comprehensive, glaucoma, retina, and pediatric ophthalmologic care.
