Pediatric Pulmonary Bootcamp

  • Topics covered: Interpretation of Pulmonary Function Tests, Introduction to Cystic Fibrosis, Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, Asthma, Bronchoscopy, Sleep Disordered Breathing, Ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, Acute and Chronic Ventilator Management
ECMO Training Conference
September (2 ½ days)
  • During this conference, pulmonary fellows attend an introductory course on ECMO with NICU and PICU

Pulmonary Physiology
September – February
  • Each fellow presents a physiology topic once a month over a 5-month period. The topics are rotated such that each year the fellow presents a new topic. By the end of the 3rd year, each fellow has had the opportunity to present each of the selected topics

Pediatric Fellows Departmental Conference
Mondays 12:00 -1:00 p.m.
  • This weekly interactive seminar includes the core curriculum for all the pediatric fellows. It features presentations on choosing research projects, grant writing, research methods, biostatistics, and career development. In addition, there are case-based discussions in pediatric ethics, evidence-based medicine, teaching skills, system-error analysis, quality improvement, economics of health care and cultural competency

Cystic Fibrosis Conference

Tuesdays 12:00 -1:00 p.m.

  • This weekly multispecialty conference addresses the care of patients with Cystic Fibrosis. The management of individual patients is reviewed, and input is provided by physicians, nurses, social worker, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and dieticians
Journal Club

Monthly

  • During this conference pulmonary faculty and fellows present a topical article. Fellows receive training in critically reviewing the literature, placing new findings into context, and discerning the impact on clinical care
Sleep Conference

Bi-monthly

  • This bi-monthly conference includes review of interesting sleep studies by pediatric sleep medicine physicians
Quality Improvement (QI)

Once Quarterly

  • Fellows work on QI projects each year. They meet quarterly with the Vice-Chair of Quality and Safety for the Department of Pediatrics to review their findings and present their progress to the pulmonary section
Bronchoscopy Conference
Once Quarterly
  • The goal of this conference is to improve fellows’ understanding of the indications and contraindications for flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Airway abnormalities, related disorders and complications are discussed

Structural Competency Anti-Racist Training
Once Quarterly
  • During this conference, there is an exploration of the social construct of race and the impact of systemic racism on society and pulmonary health

Morbidity/Mortality/Patient Safety
Once Quarterly
  • During this conference adverse outcomes in patient care are analyzed using a systems-based approach. Patient safety is also reviewed at this conference and best practices to avoid adverse outcomes are reviewed

Research in Progress

Annually

  • This conference provides an opportunity for pulmonary fellows and faculty to present ongoing research. Faculty and fellows present the study design and results from their research projects; fellows present yearly. The conference is also used to prepare fellows for presentations of their research at national meetings
