Shamsuddin Akhtar, MD

Professor of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology; Medical Director of YNHH 7-1 Surgical Intensive Care Unit

I am a professor of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology (adjunct) at Yale School of Medicine (YSM) (Clinician-Educator-Scholar track) and serve on the school’s Admissions Committee.

My academic career has focused on the perioperative care of patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. My clinical research has focused on several topics, including perioperative myocardial infarction, use of beta blockers in the perioperative period, and perioperative hyperglycemia. More recently I have transitioned to care of elderly patients undergoing surgery, specifically intraoperative geriatric anesthesia care. In addition to working in the operating room, I also spend 50% of my clinical time in the surgical ICU.

I served as an anesthesia clerkship director for several years and mentored many students on their thesis. It was wonderful experience and now I am thrilled to serve as a longitudinal coach for Yale medical students, and value the long-term relationships that will be formed due to this program. The mentorship of students, trainees, and junior faculty is something that I particularly enjoy and is a fulfilling aspect of my career.
